A new Chinese movie is casting a spotlight on a long-debatedquestion: Should personal values be prioritized over traditionalfamily values?

Sister tells the story of 24-year-old An Ran. Following the sudden death of her two parents in a car crash, An faces the tough choice of pursuing her own life or raising her younger brother. It has sparked a national discourse about China's patriarchal culture and the widespread preference among parents to have boys.

《我的姐姐》讲述了24岁的安然的故事。随着她的父母在车祸中突然去世,她面临着艰难的选择,是追求自己的生活还是抚养弟弟。它引发了一场关于中国父权文化和父母普遍重男轻女的全国性讨论。


The film reflects a social issue in China - a traditional preference for sons and deep- rooted patriarchal norms,one of the movie's central themes. While An was a little girl- a time when the one-child policy was still in full effect - her parents forced her to pretend to be lame in order to get permission to have a second child- her little brother. After the boy's birth, her parents give almost all of their love to their son while ignoring An.

During the film, the audience gradually learns about An's hardships, such as having to pretend to be disabled so her parents could be granted permission by authorities to have a second child in the years before China lifted its one-child policy in 2015.

Others were drawn to the difficult moral dilemma. "If Iwas the sister, I would pursue my career, because I would choose to love myself every time before choosing to love my family,"another Weibo user commented under a separate post.

On Wednesday, a news report bearing similarities to the movie's themes also became a topic of discussion on Weibo. A 20-year-old from the eastern city of Hangzhou reportedly killed herself after she was unable to care for her three siblings after their parents divorced.

周三,一则与电影主题相似的新闻报道也成为微博上的热议话题。据报道,来自东部城市杭州的一位20岁女孩在父母离婚后因无法照顾自己的三个兄弟姐妹而自杀。


In an interview with The Beijing News, the film's screenwriter,You Xiaoying, said An's story isn't entirely fictional, and is partially a reflection of reality. She said one of her friends was in a similar situation as the movie's protagonist, which prompted her to explore the subject further,and “I saw that there were a lot of conficts and struggles in these families, I wanted to explore Why," she said.

The film drew comments from renowned scholars, such as Li Yinhe, a pioneering sociologist studying sex and gender roles in China. In a lengthy post on Weibo, she described the movie as“a profound work based on solid social reality".

Li said that besides gender inequality, the film also explored the conflict between filial piety and individualism in a modernized society.“So it becomes a Hamletian dilemma ... should we pursue individual values, or sacrifice them for our families? As theaters in North America are hailing Hollywood monster mash Godzilla vs. Kong for setting the best pandemic box office record over the Easter weekend, Chinese feature film Sister, which tackles sibling relationships, quickly defeated Warner Bros' tent pole during China's Qingming Festival holiday.On review site Douban,“Sister”has scored 7.2 out of 10.

Chinese film experts say that Chinese audiences are getting bored with Hollywood's special effects extravaganzas and are more willing to see Chinese stories told with cutting-edge film technology on the big screen.

中国电影专家表示,中国观众已经厌倦了好莱坞华丽的特效,他们更愿意在大屏幕上看到用前沿电影技术讲述的中国故事。


At Monday noon, the total box office for the three-day Qingming Festival holiday surpassed 700 million yuan($107 million), setting a new record for the holiday period. Sister and Godzilla vs. Kong account for more than 80 percent of this box office,according to Chinese ticketing platform Beacon.

"Hollywood films like Godzilla VS.Kong can barely attract a strong interest among Chinese audiences a sit only captures their eyes by providing a visual feast without reaching a certain emotional resonance with the moviegoers," Xiao Fuqiu, a film critic based in Shanghai,told the Global Times on Monday." Emotional resonance is also the reason why Sister toppled Godzilla VS.Kong and it explains why domestic blockbusters have overwhelmed Hollywood films to become champions at the annual box office in China in recent years," he added.

According to media reports, Sister surpassed Godzilla VS. Kong and moved into the No.1 position only six hours after its release on Friday even though its screen share was only half that of Godzilla VS. Kong.

If Godzilla vs. Kong had been released during the Qingming Festival holiday(from Saturday to Monday) to be day and date with its North America and HBOmax releases, it would not have performed as well due to the inevitable release of pirated copies stemming from a streaming launch,while competition from Sister would further squeeze its living space in theaters, according to Xiao.

The Sister's success relies on its rare truth and sincerity. It focuses on gender discrimination caused by unequal patriarchal attitudes. This topic has a broad audience base and is in line with current 'feminist' trends,'' Shi Wenxue, a film critic and teacher at the Beijing Film Academy,told the Global Times on Monday.

Three other Chinese films including the animated Monkey King Reborn,comedy-drama The Eleventh Chapter and romantic drama Tomorrow Will Be Fine were also released during the festival, taking in 58.59 million yuan,37.80 million yuan and 24.61 million yuan respectively, according to Maoyan on Monday.

据猫眼周一报道,包括动画电影《西游记之大圣归来》、喜剧电影《第十一章》和爱情片《明天会好的》在内的其他三部中国电影也在电影节上映,分别获得了5859万元、3780万元和2461万元的票房收入。


从现在的中国社会,每一天的社会新闻,每一天的鹅组大战,我们仍旧看到众多的中国女性直至今日还过着安然姑妈那样的生活,甚至更糟糕,不要说精神自由,连人身自由可能可能没有完全达到。于是,在这样的社会环境下,电影中的结局自然很容易被看成是“回归家庭”,是“妥协”,是“洗脑”。在有些家庭,即使没有责任,只要家里有男孩,“女孩”这个身份都在影响她们的人生。对于每个女孩来说,抚养弟弟不是你的责任,也不是你的义务。也不要让自己,成为不负责任的父母情感绑架的牺牲品。你们的人生,本也可以拥抱星辰大海,这才是最符合人性的道德。
